Is Demonbane Different than the Other Dragons?

Warning: This post contains some spoilers.

Some readers have noted that Demonbane seems more powerful than the other dragons. Of course, Demonbane is older than most other dragons, but they wonder if his ferocity and strength are strictly due to his age and size, or is there something else that sets him apart. Three passages in particular seem to emphasize the distinction.

In Shadow World Revealed, when the time has come for the ceremony in which the recruits bond with their dragons, Demonbane leads the young dragons to the knoll, while all of the other dragons, with their riders, fly in columns beside the young dragons. In other words, Demonbane leads the entire procession.

In Shadow World Enflamed, when Evan and Myong tell of their encounter with Soulreaver, Demonbane is enraged and swears to take upon himself the task of ridding the world of the abomination. No other dragon reacts the way Demanbane does. While they may oppose the creation of such a creature, they do not take it as a personal commitment to destroy the creature.

The fact is that Demonbane is not like the other dragons. He is the king of all dragonkind. As such, it is his place to lead the other dragons into the ceremony. With him as king of dragons, the black dragons are not merely the mounts of those who oppose Illomen, they are traitors to his reign. As king of all dragons, Demonbane reacts as he does upon hearing of the abomination because he is responsible for the actions of his subjects. While the other black dragons have been disloyal to him, Soulreaver has defied their god. Demonbane cannot allow Soulreaver to exist.

Knowing who Demonbane is puts additional meaning into his encounter with General Graham in Shadow World Enflamed. When the general states, “Illomen isn’t my leader. He’s an ally, at best. I decide what’s best for my men to do, based on my own assessment of the information available. That’s my job”, Demonbane responds by first recounting Illomen’s accomplishments compared to the meager record of General Graham. Then, he declares, “You’re but a worm, gazing upon the majesty of a dragon king and trying to declare yourself his equal.” Demonbane is indeed an ally to Illomen. He fights alongside the warrior as a friend and companion. There are others, such as Marcene who share such prominence, but General Graham is not in such illustrious company. Demonbane has put the general in his place by declaring his own position and thus pointing out that even he, as king of the dragons, recognizes the right of Illomen to lead.

Nashville Parthenon

The Nashville Parthenon is the scene of many of the conflicts in the Shadow World Chronicles. First appearing in Shadow World Revealed, this beautiful replica of the ancient Greek temple to the goddess of war provides an appropriate setting for the cataclysmic struggles which are to follow.

Parthenon (Nashville)

The Parthenon in Centennial Park, in Nashville, Tennessee, is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens. It was designed by Confederate veteran William Crawford Smith and built in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition.   Today the Parthenon, which functions as an art museum, stands as the centerpiece of Centennial Park, a large public park just west of downtown Nashville. Alan LeQuire’s 1990 re-creation of the Athena Parthenos statue in the naos (the east room of the main hall) is the focus of the Parthenon just as it was in ancient Greece. Since the building is complete and its decorations were polychromed (painted in colors) as close to the presumed original as possible, this replica of the original Parthenon in Athens serves as a monument to what is considered the pinnacle of classical architecture. The plaster replicas of the Parthenon Marbles found in the Treasury Room (the west room of the main hall) are direct casts of the original sculptures which adorned the pediments of the Athenian Parthenon, dating back to 438 BC. The surviving originals are housed in the British Museum in London and at the Acropolis Museum in Athens.

Whenever we have family come to visit us, we usually take them to the Nashville Parthenon. Along with the replicas of the Parthenon Marbles, there are also miniature replicas that depict what the originals looked like when they were complete.

Unfortunately, in the Shadow World Chronicles, the Nashville Parthenon is the center of different battles and does not fare well in the conflict.

However, if you ever visit Nashville, Tennessee, be sure to visit the Nashville Parthenon and make sure to see the museum and all the beautiful items there.

This is the Nashville Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Most noteworthy, this is where Illomen does his magic show in Shadow World Revealed.

It used to be the Gaylord Entertainment Center and it is the home of the Nashville Predators hockey team.

The Nashville Bridgestone Arena hosts many types of events, from sports events to concerts to Cirque du Soleil shows. Certainly, we have seen many of those Cirque du Soleil shows.

Depending on the type of event, it can seat from 10,000 – 20,000. This gives you an idea of the size of venue for Illomen’s magic show. Can you picture the glass stage in the center of the arena and all of the seats being filled with spectators, anxious to see some magic? Furthermore, what do you think it would have been like if you had been there? Share your answer in the comments below.

My Favorite Excerpt – Shadow World Revealed

Here’s one of my favorite excerpts from Shadow World Revealed. I thought it might give you an insight to some of what the book is like.

Illomen turned toward the silent professor.

Trembling, Louis could see the pulse throbbing in Illomen’s temple and knew the man was furious. Hoping to salvage the situation, he stammered, “I know it looks bad. You must remember that the creature is a wild animal. The goats are given as much pain killer as we can provide. If we sedate them, the creature won’t eat them until they’ve recovered. We’re trying to be humane.”

“You ignorant, arrogant fool,” Illomen snapped. Each word hammered the professor like a physical blow. “Did it ever occur to you that the egg was in the ice so it would incubate slower? Did you ever think that by increasing the temperature of the egg you forced the creature to hatch sooner and less developed? Did it ever penetrate into the recesses of your diminished brain that by interfering, you were transforming a wondrous creature into the savage brute before you?”

Louis stood rebuked and humiliated. Finding himself on the defensive, he reverted to his normal temperament. “I don’t have to take that from you. You know nothing of this creature. I’m doing the best I can to determine what it is and what type of lifecycle it has. You come in here with your fantasies of wondrous, magical flying dragons and get mad at me because you meet reality instead of fantasy. Do I want your funding for my studies? Yes. Will I put up with your brow beating to get it? Not for a minute.”

Ice dripping from each word, Illomen stated, “I’ll give you the ten million dollars to kill this creature right now and put it out of its misery. I assure you that is the best offer you’ll receive today.”

“Get out!” Louis screamed. “Who do you think you are? I’ll not be intimidated by you!”

“You lose,” Illomen hissed. Stalking from the barn, he paused to tap the end of his cane on the concrete barrier. Without a word, he walked out the gate and up the lane toward the highway, never looking back at the scene behind him.

Shadow World Revealed New Edition

Shadow World Revealed New Edition

A new edition of Shadow World Revealed is finally finished. Exciting news!! This urban fantasy is now available in both the Kindle edition and paperback, to purchase from Amazon. You can get the Kindle version here and you can get the paperback here.  Just so you know, the story is the same. Only the cover has changed.

Here’s the story of how we came up with the new version of the cover for the book. Last month, when we went to our oldest granddaughter’s graduation, her dad made some observations about the cover of the book and how it didn’t really fit the genre. He suggested having a portal with an image of Nashville showing through the portal.

However, when he saw the initial draft of the new cover, he felt like it still wasn’t quite right. After that, he came up with the idea of having Nashville reflected in the eye of a dragon, instead of a portal.

It took several revisions to finally get the dragon looking the way we wanted it to look. From there, it was a matter of finding a complimentary color that would show up for the title. We really like the way it came out, now that it’s all finished.

The next step is to create the revised covers for the others books in the Shadow World Chronicles. Each new edition will have a different colored dragon, with a different image in the eye.

Feel free to leave a comment to let us know what you think of the revised cover. We would love to hear from you.
