Author Q & A

As promised, here are Martin’s answers to some questions about him and his books. We hope you enjoy getting to know him a little better. If you have any further questions you would like to know the answers to, please post them in the comments section below or post it on our Facebook page and we may include it in the next Author Q&A.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.

A:  I am a retired artilleryman, a husband, a father, a grandfather, an educator, and a life-long story teller. I have always had an imagination, but I never really indulged in that aspect of my life until I became a father. My children were always eager to hear a tale, and I would either make something up from scratch or take a familiar tale and shift it around a little. I think their favorite character was Nerdy Nelson, a kindly fellow who made up for his lack of strength or skill with his intellect and imagination.

Q:  Tell us a little about your book, Shadow World Revealed.

A:  Shadow World Revealed is urban fantasy. It explores the possibility of our world interacting with a world rich in magic. The reader may almost think they have stumbled across a simple murder mystery at the beginning of the book, but they quickly learn that there are aspects to this murder that do not align with the world we are used to. As they continue, I hope their imagination takes flight as they experience the power of real magic or the thrill of riding on the back of a dragon. More than that, I hope they see a little bit of themselves in the heroes from Shadow World and our own Earth.

Q: So, why did you write Shadow World Revealed?

A:  The simplest answer to that question is that my children grew up. My wife asked me to write some of my stories so that my children and grandchildren would be able to continue enjoying my tales. The family is spread around the country, so I can’t gather them around me and tell a story like I used to. But, there is another reason. The main characters in my book have always been with me. They are drawn from personalities of so many different people I have met along this life’s journey, and they slip into my daydreams, filling my world with wonder. My books allow me to introduce them to the world. I can tell you that they have become very familiar people in my home. We frequently talk of how Illomen, Dannock or Elaine would act if confronted with an issue in our life or the life of some character in a movie. So, I wrote the book to allow other people to know the characters who have become so dear to me.

Q: What is your favorite passage in the book?

A:  I love the scene where Illomen performs as an illusionist. Up until this point, few people in our world had met Illomen, and nobody knew the kind of power he possesses. I picture myself as a member of the audience, watching this man standing alone on a bare stage, asking a simple question, “Do you
believe in magic”.
